Queens Tech Corner: Thomas Hu of Pong Space
It’s Queens Tech Corner time! The Queens Tech Corner is a regular segment on our Queens Chamber social media channels where we shine the spotlight on tech entrepreneurs doing exciting things right here in Queens.
Can you tell us about your company and how you got your start?
Pongspace’s mission is to be the glue of table tennis in the U.S. We currently connect people to places to play. In the coming year, we will be rolling out features where people can connect with each other and other stakeholders in the sport such as equipment providers, coaches, and fans. We started the idea during the pandemic when we saw many clubs closing due to lack of people playing. We followed the model of Opentable and applied that to table tennis, except we provide the service for free to help the community rebuild.
What is your latest project and what excites you about it?
Our latest project involves virtual coaching. We have installed the pilot version at Spin Midtown and are currently getting feedback. We look forward to announcing the launch soon. It will be a lot of hard work but we are super excited because it will solve a big problem in the U.S. because we will be able to provide expert help to millions of people in the suburban areas of the country.
Why are you excited about the future of tech in Queens?
I am excited about the future of tech in Queens because it's so accessible for tech talent. As someone who grew up in New York, I know firsthand that the city has a fantastic education environment from grade school to post graduate. Furthermore, it is one of the most diverse districts in the world! So, the ceiling for the tech future of Queens is very high!
